Top 10 Powerleveling Tips Guide

Here is my take on the best Top 10 Tips for fast leveling (in no particular order).

  1. Quest a lot. Select quests with tasks that are easy and fast to do. Favor quests where you have to kill X monsters since they'll give you both the quest experience reward and monster experience reward. Related quests, including quests whose targets are packed closely together, are usually the most efficient experience-wise. Use Thottbot.comfor every single quest you accept (or consider accepting) so you immediately know how to complete it (or whether it is worth doing). Dungeon quests are usually not worth the effort experience-wise. (They may very well be worth the effort item-wise, though).
  2. Kill mobs when travelling, especially when you are at full health and charged for burst damage.
  3. Minimize downtime by having (primarily healing and mana) potions ready. Also, keep bandages and stat-boosting foods.
  4. Spec for burst damage and high DPS. This includes both your talent build and your gear. Don't overspend on your gear, though, because if you level fast you will quickly outgrow it. I update (most of) my gear every five levels or so, spending the most on my weapon.
  5. If you like a bit of grinding once in a while, then make sure you choose a good grinding area. A good grinding area is one where the mobs are plenty, where you can take them down one at a time, and where you can kill them fast. Although I don't grind much, when I do, I usually select mobs that are a few levels lower than me. Although lower level mobs yield less experience, I can usually kill them much faster, giving a net gain per time unit.
  6. Always log out when staying at an inn or in a capital city. Doing so means resting. When you are rested, you earn double the experience from mobs. In a week, you get 1½ level of resting. This translates into 0.75 "free level" every week. Very nice. People with limited play time (say, less than 10 hours a week) should consider only playing when rested, particularly at the higher levels. Note that quest and discovery experience do not "eat into" your resting.
  7. Loot every monster you kill and sell the loot at the Auction House. Throw away loot that is simply not worth the effort. This includes most (if not all) Grey items and sometimes also some white and green items. (If you have Enchanting then disenchant such green items.)
  8. Master your avatar. That means your skills and your spells. Form combat strategies. Optimize your kill rate. Use Addons that measure and improve your DPS. Use macros. Experiment. Learn from friends. Read articles. Its seems there is always a bit more to learn. Indeed, that is one of the reasons why I really love WoW!
  9. Focus on soloing. Grouping yields less experience.
  10. Always have the gold you need. Hard for some. Easy for those that use GGuides.
